Description:
In addition to the popular 15 Star reverse die, the 1799/8 obverse die was used with two other reverse dies bearing the normal 13 stars.

The resulting 1799/8 13 Star variety is also quite popular with collectors.  However, in contrast to the 15 Star overdate variety, the 13 Star varieties are decidedly scarcer, but nice specimens do exist and can be found with patience.

At MS63, the Cardinal Collection specimen ranks as the second finest known specimen of the BB-142 variety, and third finest known of all 1799/8 13 Star dollars.  Pedigreed to the French Family Collection, this specimen is exceedingly well struck throughout.  Basically untoned, the coin blazes with incredible cartwheel luster.
